Sgt. Leo A. Salinas, MARINE CORPS NEWS, HEADQUARTERS MARINE CORPS

Sgt. Leo A. Salinas was born in Dallas and attended recruit training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego in 1997.

Upon graduating from Military Police School in Ft. McClellan, Ala., he served as a military policeman during tours at Marine Corps Air Station Futenma, Japan and MP Company, 2nd Force Service Support Group.

He made the switch to the public affairs field in 2001.

"I wanted to stay in the Marines, but there were no boat spaces as a MP," he said. "I sat in the career planners office and talked about what other jobs there were in the Corps."

The date was Sept. 11, 2001. A small clock radio on the career planner's desk was relaying the message that the World Trade Center was just attacked.

"We both realized what was happening and the significance of the situation," he said. "As a chance of fate, I pointed to the military occupational specialty chart and said, 'put me in this job.'"

Since that day he has served as a combat correspondent in Camp Lejuene, N.C., and Camp Pendleton, Calif. In 2003 he deployed to Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom with I Marine Expeditionary Force.

After attending the Military Photojournalism Course at Syracuse University, he reported to Headquarters Marine Corps as the newest member of Marines staff.
