The Purple Heart is the oldest military decoration in the U.S. military. It is awarded to those who are wounded in action while serving in the armed forces. It is also presented posthumously to the next of kin of personnel killed in action or who die of wounds sustained in action. More than 4,600 Marines have received the medal since the Global War on Terrorism began in 2001. Gen. George Washington authorized the creation of the medal during the Revolutionary War.
