Sgt. Paul Kane, MARINE CORPS NEWS, HEADQUARTERS MARINE CORPS

Sgt. Paul Kane enlisted in the Marine Corps at 23, after graduating from the University of Maryland. He joined the Marine reserves.

Kane said he enlisted after being inspired by the pictures from the 1983 bombing of the Marine Barracks in Lebanon.

Sgt. Kane went on to train at Camp Geiger’s Infantry Training and NBC Defense Schools during the Cold War when the likely opponent was the USSR. He completed his reserve duty in 1988 and was honorably discharged in 1990. After Sept. 11, 2001, Kane reenlisted at the age of 39.

In April 2003, Sgt. Kane was mobilized to active duty and deployed to Iraq in a lieutenant colonel’s billet with the Operation Iraqi Freedom Combat Assessment Team. The team traveled across Iraq interviewing hundreds of small unit leaders, surveying 5,500 Marines about lessons learned.

In 2004, Kane conducted a research for Marine Corps Combat Development Command of 34,000 returning OIF II veterans to find out how the Corps could improve retention, family support and morale.

In his civilian life, Kane lives in Boston with his wife and works as a research analyst at Harvard University.
