Staff Sgt. Scott Dunn, HEADQUARTERS MARINE CORPS

No combat experience. No college degree. Hasn’t deployed since Gen. Chuck Krulak was commandant.

His resume might lack some of the obvious homerun bullets Marines would expect from the guy handling the Corps’ official magazine; nevertheless, the new managing editor at Marines has a clear guess on how he got his assignment here: “I care, and somebody was aware of that.”

Staff Sgt. Scott Dunn, 28, comes to Marines from Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego where he served as press chief at a public affairs office. He replaces Gunnery Sgt. Glenn Holloway, a heavy hitter in his field who will retire this summer after serving
20 years in the Corps.

“I have a fraction of his Marine experiences and big shoes to fill,” said Dunn. “But I’m excited to start filling.”

Dunn completed the Defense Department’s Military Photojournalism Program at Syracuse University in 2003, and his works and mentorship yield accolades and excellence in the public affairs field year after year.

“Our storytellers have always needed a place for expertise and guidance. That place is supposed to be here at the headquarters. Hopefully, I can keep that beacon burning bright.”

Dunn’s journalism experience began 12 years ago during his high-school newspaper days in his hometown of Sacramento, Calif., where he also dabbled in darkroom photography. He enlisted in the Marine Corps’ delayed-entry program in September 1995 to serve as a combat correspondent.

“I’ve always thought being a (combat correspondent) is the sweetest job. We’re the pen and the sword. Now I’m at the flagship,” said Dunn, adding that he does not assume his new role as if he has arrived at a final destination. Dunn sees his biggest tests in the ever-changing conduits of information from the Internet and its blogosphere to improved multimedia technologies. “They’re
making this job more and more challenging. We have much work to do.”

Dunn said he is most proud of his occupational field because in it, he believes, one man or woman can help ensure a Marine Corps for the next 500 years just as well as any warrior in the modern fray.
